1646. The Lunar phases Francesco Fontana
Lawyer, astronomer, a maker of scientific instruments and a Napolitano engraver, Francesco Fontana (v.1580-1656) published in 1646 the Novae coelestium terrestriumque rerum observationes, where he presents the Moon under its number of phases.
By retaking Galileo’s representation in Sidereus Nuncius, Fontana highlights the Moon’s surface with impact craters. The use of a convex lens explains the reversed image (you can notice the crater Tycho located on the north of the map, as opposed to his original location).
