1898. A unachieved work: J. N. Krieger’s atlas

Johann Nepomuk Krieger (1865-1902) is a German selenographer who pursued his life on the making of a Moon atlas. After a decisive meeting with Hermann Klein (1844-1914), a selenographer and popularizer, he studies mathematics, physics, photography and fine arts.

Hermann Klein offers to Krieger negatives of the Moon made from observations at Lick (California) and in Paris. By first completing his first sources with his own observations, Krieger produces drawings with the use of china ink, pencil and charcoal. Tired, absorbed and obsessed of this project, Krieger died at 37 years old, and only published 18 drawings in total from the 58 initially planned.
